Large-scale reservoir refurbishment

We completed a major refurbishment project at a strategically important water treatment works, extending the lifespan – by over 10 years – of a critical asset whilst mitigating the need for a costly and carbon intensive new build alternative.

Storm tank installation

A 55 cubic metre sectional-steel storm tank with sustainable features was installed at a wastewater treatment site to comply with regulations to cut sewage overflows. The works significantly reduced running costs for our client and allowed them to meet specified carbon reduction targets while increasing stormwater capacity to help protect local waterways for decades to come.

Large-scale weir removal

On behalf of the EA we successfully opened 340 miles of catchment in the largest project of its kind – in the country – by removing a 70 meter wide, 900 year old medieval weir. Removing the weir significantly improved fish migration, spawning grounds and habitat. Fallen water levels have also allowed natural ecological processes to recommence.

Reedbed refurbishments

Stonbury were engaged to carry out refurbishment works to a reedbed system at a Water Recycling Centre (WRC) in the South of England.

Larinier type fish pass installation

Stonbury were commissioned to install a fish pass at Crumpwood Weir, near Uttoxeter, which was identified as a significant barrier to fish migration.

River channel works

Working with an ecologist, Stonbury recently cleared 650 metres of dry channel, including the removal of obstructions to flow.

River embankment maintenance

After a successful past three years, Stonbury was again selected by the Environment Agency to complete essential maintenance works to 35 kilometres of flood embankments along the River Severn.

River survey

Stonbury recently completed a comprehensive river survey in the South West of England, to provide the client with a better understanding of the fish populations within a local river.

Riverbank badger exclusion

Stonbury was enlisted by the Environment Agency to relocate badgers and install netting to exclude wildlife from a section of river embankment in preparation for strengthening works.

Invertebrate surveys

Stonbury completed two invertebrate surveys on the River Avon to sample above and below discharge points, using a Yorkshire Pattern airlift pump.

Riverbank erosion works

Stonbury was enlisted to install emergency erosion control measures to a riverbank in Northwest England after a section had collapsed.

Invasive species clearance

Stonbury was contacted by a local council regarding an on-line balancing pond that was built on the Moorgreen Stream, due to overgrowth of Typha latifolia (bulrush/reedmace) and the presence of the invasive non-native Hydrocotyle ranunculoides (floating pennywort) identified by the Environment Agency.

Silt removal

Stonbury were set to task by the Environment Agency to carefully remove silt from a section of channel in the River Brit.

Sluice gate and channel works

Stonbury was employed by the Environment Agency to complete refurbishments to a sluice gate and associated structures on the River Toe.

Hydrometric station asset maintenance

Following the successful completion of routine maintenance works at over forty-five hydrometric stations, Stonbury has been awarded several contracts to manage and carry out routine quarterly maintenance at over one hundred gauging sites across Wales.

Headwall replacement

Stonbury has been contracted by the Environment Agency to replace the headwalls on a storm water drainage pipe in an embankment that had become destabilised by natural erosion.

Habitat protection during reservoir repair

Stonbury was contracted to complete a repair to a crack in a reservoir roof located within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) containing the protected plant species Hairy Mallow.

Sluice gate release

Early contractor involvement resulted in a timely and cost-effective solution for a seized sluice gate that was causing uncontrolled flows.

Flume weir repair & refurbishment

Stonbury was contracted to carry out repair works to a flume weir which had failed due to a leak around the wing wall. The leak had eroded the bank to such an extent that a large void had formed.
