Project in numbers
3 weeks allotted to inspect, clean and repair three 700-cubic metre tanks
1 day each tank took to clean using the specialised chemical method, and the number of weeks this takes by hand
The need
The three 700-cubic-metre contact tanks required routine maintenance and repairs to comply with DWI regulations. The project required an efficient turnaround to return the tanks to service within a three-week allotted timeframe.
Due to the delicate nature of the coating on the concrete tank walls, high-pressure water jetting (HPWJ) was an unsuitable cleaning method for these assets. This posed a challenge for the Stonbury team, as cleaning the tank by hand would prove too slow to allow adequate time to complete the repairs before the project deadline.
The solution
With authorisation from the client, we enlisted our colleagues from Panton McLeod to assist us. Providing expert chemical methods which dissolve brown staining, each remaining 700-cubic-metre tank was successfully cleaned in just one day.
This afforded the Stonbury team considerable extra time to complete the necessary repairs, which included 933 mortar repairs to Sika 62 wall coatings on over 70 areas, lifting and re-bedding three hatches, and fabricating and installing three steel ladders and sump handrails.
The benefits
- The Panton McLeod chemical clean, using PM88 and PM55 cleaning agents, provided a fast, low-pressure solution that successfully dissolved hard, encrusted biofilm staining from walls and baffles and removed bacteria from the tank without damaging the wall coatings.
- The method significantly shortened the clean times, allowing extensive repairs to be completed within the programmed timeframe.
- While HPWJ is preferable for some tanks, the chemical clean provides a superior solution for coated concrete, reduces the need for water tankers and is easily neutralised for discharge to protect water quality.
- Combining Stonbury’s expert knowledge of the asset and Panton McLeod’s specialist chemical cleaning techniques had resulted in highly improved efficiency and therefore a successful and cost-effective outcome for our client.
