Large-scale reservoir refurbishment

We completed a major refurbishment project at a strategically important water treatment works, extending the lifespan – by over 10 years – of a critical asset whilst mitigating the need for a costly and carbon intensive new build alternative.

Storm tank installation

A 55 cubic metre sectional-steel storm tank with sustainable features was installed at a wastewater treatment site to comply with regulations to cut sewage overflows. The works significantly reduced running costs for our client and allowed them to meet specified carbon reduction targets while increasing stormwater capacity to help protect local waterways for decades to come.

Large-scale weir removal

On behalf of the EA we successfully opened 340 miles of catchment in the largest project of its kind – in the country – by removing a 70 meter wide, 900 year old medieval weir. Removing the weir significantly improved fish migration, spawning grounds and habitat. Fallen water levels have also allowed natural ecological processes to recommence.

Constructed wetland refurbishment

We refurbished a large constructed wetland at a water recycling centre to restore effluent processing efficiency within the reed beds

Improving water conveyance

Flash flooding has become a major challenge across the UK affecting both water catchment and the wastewater network, making projects that maximise water conveyance and reduce flooding a vital part of our work. This particular project re-enabled the effective operation of a flood storage area upstream.

Harbour desilting & flood gate release

Stonbury was asked by the Environment Agency to propose and execute a solution to free a set of floodgates within a harbour on the bank of the tidal River Severn.

Maintenance works

Stonbury was contracted to carry out maintenance works along a section of a man-made channel after years of neglect had caused the channel to become overgrown.

Public park desilt

Stonbury were contracted to carry out desilting works to an ornamental lake at a public park.

Primary settlement tank repairs

Stonbury’s concrete repair work has prolonged the life of a primary settlement tank on a sewage treatment works in the Midlands.

Railway culvert repairs

Stonbury was awarded a scheme to carry out brickwork repairs to a 50-metre-long Victorian-built flood alleviation culvert under a live railway.

Reedbed refurbishment

Stonbury has completed works on a seventh bed as part of an ongoing framework to refurbish sixteen reedbeds on a raw water purification site in Southeast England.

Reedbed refurbishment works

Following a condition appraisal, Stonbury were contracted to complete refurbishment works to an existing reed bed, constructed to treat the leachate from a capped putrescible tip.

Reservoir refurbishment

Stonbury were contracted to complete internal and external refurbishment works to a large clean water reservoir.

Lagoon repairs

As the main contractor for refurbishment works, a framework client required Stonbury to install a cofferdam system and carry out repairs to a settling tank at a water treatment works.

Lagoon repair and refurbishment

To extend the life of two final settlement lagoons, Stonbury was required to carry out refurbishment works, which included repairs to the outfall structure, the installation of an EPDM liners and replacement pipework.

Lagoon refurbishment

A final settlement lagoon required repair and refurbishment work due to wildlife damage and bank slippage, which had caused the lagoon to leak. A ‘Land Drainage’ consent from the local council was required before the works to the channel could go ahead.

Riverbank badger protection

Stonbury was enlisted by the Environment Agency to relocate badgers and install netting to exclude wildlife from a section of river embankment in preparation for strengthening works.

Invasive species clearance

Stonbury was contacted by a local council regarding an on-line balancing pond that was built on the Moorgreen Stream, due to overgrowth of Typha latifolia (bulrush/reedmace) and the presence of the invasive non-native Hydrocotyle ranunculoides (floating pennywort) identified by the Environment Agency.

Silt removal

Stonbury were set to task by the Environment Agency to carefully remove silt from a section of channel in the River Brit.
