Storm Tanks

Stonbury’s storm tank programmes ensure clients adhere to minimum storage requirements to help solve the problem of excess overspills.

Climate change, urban expansion and a growing population is putting increasing pressure on the UK’s sewerage system, leading to a significant rise in overspill events. As a result, the Environment Agency has introduced minimum storage volumes to progressively increase capacity across wastewater treatment sites in Britain.

Stonbury’s programmes offer tailored, innovative solutions to help water industry clients maximise stormwater storage and meet regulator targets without compromising on cost, quality or the environment.

Early contractor involvement

Stonbury’s early contactor involvement (ECI) allows engineers to engage with clients from the initial survey and design stages to assess current asset capacity and calculate the most cost-efficient, low-carbon design to meet the precise volume requirement.

Referring to the Carbon Curve to inform its projects, Stonbury endeavours to utilise what is already present before building new. Stonbury’s first priority is to maintain assets to avoid building interventions, followed by refurbishing existing assets and making adaptations before a new build is considered.

Intelligent solutions

Stonbury’s low-intervention methods minimise asset down time, cost expenditure and carbon footprint. Innovative, made-to-measure solutions can be installed even in highly space-restricted sites and modifications can be completed in significantly shorter timeframes when compared to building new replacement infrastructure.

Examples include:

‘Bolt on’ tank extensions made from steel for small capacity increases

Concrete or brick tank extensions constructed whilst existing infrastructure remains in service and connected post-construction

Additional storage tanks which are then interlinked with the existing storage through pipework connections

Existing pipework adaptation to increase storage within an existing asset

Repurposing of existing or abandoned assets

Reducing carbon

The Environment Agency’s Storm Overflows Reduction Plan expects water companies to consider carbon reduction in planning necessary expansions. Stonbury is proud to put sustainability at the top of its agenda, helping to drive down its client’s carbon footprints by offering a range of programmes which refurbish or modify existing infrastructure before building new.
