The need

Our client’s previous bio-solid storage method was uncovered, allowing rainwater to contaminate the material, leaching nutrients and carrying pollutants into nearby watercourses.

The biosolid became unsuitable for reuse and needed safe disposal, negatively impacting local ecology. The client needed an improved solution to safely dry store up to 24,000 tonnes of biosolid waste across their three sites.

The solution

Our project involves the construction of 24-metre-by-12-metre process waste (cake) bays as per a client-supplied design. Once complete, there will be 20 on the first site, 12 on the second, and 10 on the third.

Topographical and drainage surveys were completed to confirm that guttering and drainage was working and positioned to ensure there was no chance of flooding and all cake bays remained dry.

In areas where existing concrete bases posed a risk of
egress, the joint sealant was removed and replaced to
maintain containment of waste materials and safeguard the local environment.

We constructed the cake bays using pre-case Legato blocks and prefabricated steel and membrane sheet roofs.
