Large-scale reservoir refurbishment

We completed a major refurbishment project at a strategically important water treatment works, extending the lifespan – by over 10 years – of a critical asset whilst mitigating the need for a costly and carbon intensive new build alternative.

Storm tank installation

A 55 cubic metre sectional-steel storm tank with sustainable features was installed at a wastewater treatment site to comply with regulations to cut sewage overflows. The works significantly reduced running costs for our client and allowed them to meet specified carbon reduction targets while increasing stormwater capacity to help protect local waterways for decades to come.

Large-scale weir removal

On behalf of the EA we successfully opened 340 miles of catchment in the largest project of its kind – in the country – by removing a 70 meter wide, 900 year old medieval weir. Removing the weir significantly improved fish migration, spawning grounds and habitat. Fallen water levels have also allowed natural ecological processes to recommence.

Diesel tanks & bunds

All surfaces to the tanks and bunds have been cleaned and prepared using specialist precision dustless blasting equipment, ensuring no contamination to other areas of the water treatment plant. Following preparation, all surfaces of the diesel tanks and pipe work have been protected by the application of a 3 coat high performance polyurethane coating. Bund areas have been locally repaired and protected by the application of a 2 coat chemically resistant epoxy coating.

Spillway repair

We completed repairs to a spillway by installing a new concrete support structure as an effective replacement for degraded gabion baskets. The spillway was built in 1906 and is essential to the effective operation of the nearby reservoir which holds 247 million litres of water.

Service reservoir demolition & new build

Due to a substantial Increase In demand, we were commissioned to construct a new 8-megalitre water tank to serve a new housing development. The programme further included the demolition of a condemned and redundant reservoir.

Surge vessel refurbishment

Stonbury was contracted for the refurbishment of 3 No surge vessels after an inspection highlighted the manways did not conform to the current confined space specification.

Tunnel lining works

As a part of an existing framework, Stonbury was contracted to carry out optioneering works to improve the condition and maintenance requirements of an impounding reservoir tunnel.

Loose membrane application

Stonbury was contracted to undertake an urgent refurbishment to a reservoir roof, after other contractors were unable to commit to the unusually tight deadline.

M&E & pipework inlet alterations

After Stonbury had completed the internal and external refurbishment of this service reservoir, our client asked us to carry out adaptions and improvements to the inlet pipework.

Magnetic vents for access covers

As part of an extensive refurbishment programme, Stonbury have been replacing the push-fit vents used inside security access covers on reservoir roofs.

Media bays

Works were recently completed at two separate Water Treatment Works to increase the aggregate storage capacities.

New build reservoir

As the Reservoir Refurbishment Framework Contractor for South Staffordshire Water, Stonbury had the opportunity to tender for the design and build of a 10Mg potable water storage point at SSW’s Outwoods site, on the outskirts of Burton on Trent.

New build reservoir partition wall

Stonbury were contracted to build a full-height division wall to create two separate compartments inside a potable water reservoir. This was due to the high demand for supply, which meant the tank could not be taken out of service for inspections and maintenance works.

New build transformer concrete bunded base

Due to a flood event inside a high voltage building, which was situated on a Water Treatment Works, Stonbury were asked to relocate the existing transformer onto a new concrete bunded base and waterproof the building to prevent future ingress.

Pipe bridges refurbishment

As part of Stonbury’s extensive refurbishment activities to water industry structures, we were recently contracted to look at various steel pipe bridge refurbishment works in and around the London area.

Rapid gravity filter tanks

Stonbury were recently contracted to carry out refurbishment works to 22 Rapid Gravity Filter tanks and outfall channels.

Reedbed refurbishment

Stonbury has completed works on a seventh bed as part of an ongoing framework to refurbish sixteen reedbeds on a raw water purification site in Southeast England.
