Case studies
Large-scale weir removal
We successfully opened 340 miles of catchment in the largest project of its kind – in the country – by removing a 70 meter wide, 900 year old medieval weir. Removing the weir significantly improved fish migration, spawning grounds and habitat. Fallen water levels have also allowed natural ecological processes to recommence.

Thorverton Gauging Station is an important site on the river Exe. It provides data for flood forecasting at Exeter and surrounding area and water resource management on the Exe. The gravel shoal that built up on the weir was badly affecting data quality at the site. Now it has been removed by Stonbury, the data quality for the site has been restored in time for summer low flows and winter high flows.
