Stonbury’s concrete repair work has prolonged the life of a primary settlement tank on a sewage treatment works in the Midlands.
The tank had several cracks visible on the inside and outside walls which was causing leakage. In addition, the top coping stones had degraded and loosened.
Replacing the tank would have been costly, carbon-intensive and highly disruptive to services, therefore Stonbury was pleased to offer its client an expert repair solution which was successfully delivered in little over one week.
After mobilising to site, Stonbury cleaned the internal wall with high-pressure water jetting (HPWJ), to remove debris and any loose substrate.
The team then removed all the coping stones and the exterior render. Once the render had been removed, there were obvious signs of water leakage from the cracks.
All the cracks on the internal face were saw-cut to a depth of 10 millimetres using a grinder equipped with a diamond blade. A specialised concrete repair product was applied to each repair site.
Once the internal crack repairs had set in accordance to the manufacturer’s Instructions for Use (IfUs), a Masterseal 586 waterproof coating was applied to the entire internal wall to help protect the tank from further degradation.
The crack repair method was repeated on the tank’s external faces before re-rendering the external walls using Natcem 35 render. Pull tests were carried out to ensure the product had set correctly and provide assurance of a high-quality, long-lasting finish.
Finally, the degraded perimeter coping stones were replaced with new and bedded into position.
The works have extended the lifespan of the asset significantly, so the client will not need to consider replacing it for many more years.
