Stonbury were contracted by a framework client to return to a service reservoir that was initially taken out of service several years ago, after an inspection highlighted asbestos fibre contamination, due to a delaminating asbestos cement inlet main.

To ensure that all relevant legislation and regulations were adhered to, Stonbury employed a specialist asbestos consultant, to act as an independent analyst and advise during the works.

We commenced by creating 2no. 2mtr x 2mtr openings into the reservoir roof, along with scaffold staircases down into the reservoir, this served as adequate and safe access and egress for the works to be carried out. Scaffold staircases were also erected onto the embankment, with separate designated walkways from these to the access points of the reservoir, allowing the risk of contamination to be restricted.

Full decontamination units were set-up at the bottom of the access staircase to ensure no contamination was spread. A full asbestos clean of the reservoir was undertaken, followed by encapsulation of the inlet main in its entirety, using MasterSeal 933, a DWI Regulation 31 approved product. The application was strictly monitored and all application and curing data recorded.

Following rigorous air and disturbance testing by the specialist asbestos consultant, the reservoir was signed-off as asbestos free. The reservoir roof was reinstated around the new roof openings, before returning to the client.
